International Olympiad in Informatics

The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is the most prestigious informatics competition for school students, and one of the five international science olympiads. It was first held in Bulgaria in 1989; Ukraine has taken part since 1992.

The competition runs over two days. The problems are algorithmic: a contestant has to find a solution and program it so that it fits within the time and memory limits. Since 1994 submissions have been graded automatically — before that an evaluator sat behind the contestant and tested by hand.

Each country selects its team through national competitions, but at the olympiad itself contestants compete individually rather than as teams. The olympiad is held under the patronage of UNESCO and IFIP.
